Why Azai Nagamasa?

Someone from Final Fantasy XIV asked me yesterday about why I like the Azai and particularly Azai Nagamasa so much.

To me the event that says so much about Nagamasa's character is at the fall of Odani castle, funny enough when the Azai are destroyed.

If you look at the fall of Odawara (the Hojo), or the fall of Osaka (The Toyotomi), entire clans getting destroyed and mass sepuku weren't uncommon. Nagamasa, however, insists on sending his wife and children to Nobunaga. Ultimately it is Nagamasa, and the Azai retainers, who commit sepuku in the castle.

To me that act speaks volumes both about his concern for his family but also about who he was as a person.

So, it's possible he naturalized. But in his flashback episode he was introducing himself as "Nicolai Asakura" to his classmates so maybe that was always his name? Did he just change it as he told the story? I'm not sure lol. I'm really not sure why he has a Japanese surname.

The only requirement for a "Japanese name" when you naturalize is that it's in Japanese characters, so his name being ニコライ in katakana would be allowed. He wouldn't have needed to change his surname to be "Japanese" either.

But the big thing, and probably the reason they used it, is that everyone at Manpuku are named after famous people from the sengoku era.

Being careful of old/outdated resources, and works that cite them

In my Christmas Truce post, I made an offhand comment on how James Murdoch’s books contains erroneous narrative. I’m going to elaborate on this, as well as presenting a warning about being careful when you read any book about Sengoku Japan.

James Murdoch’s books are useful when he directly quotes and/or translates texts from the Jesuit documents (such as Luis Frois's Historia de Japam or other missionary letters). The translation he provides matches the translation provided by a different English translator, so I’m of the opinion that his translation of Jesuit documents are not "wrong”.

It’s the narrative he provides in between is sometimes very strange. 

That is, “strange” when compared to the things that are “currently accepted as fact” about Sengoku Japan. Murdoch was in Japan in the Meiji era, and wrote his books between 1903 and 1917. Whatever source he was using, he did not cite, except for the quotes from the Catholics. Perhaps his sources were materials that were lost in the war, or things that have since been discredited due to progress in historical research.

For example, Murdoch narrates this about “Asai”:

Based on the description about how “Asai” is lord of Oumi and is married to Nobunaga’s sister, it sound like he was talking about Azai/Asai Nagamasa, but the footnote (marked by number 2 there) narrates a very very strange claim.

As a lot of Sengoku fans would know: after their defeat, Azai Nagamasa and his father are dead. Golden skull story and all. Who is this “Asai” fellow who converted into Christianity, then? Why would James Murdoch think this is what happened? What is his source? I don’t know. 

Perhaps a source had somehow confused and conflated Kyougoku Maria (who was Nagamasa’s older sister) with her brother. The footnote indicates that Murdoch had at the very least confused Maria's identity, as he named her as Chacha/Yodo-gimi’s sister for some reason. As Nagamasa’s sister, Maria would’ve been Yodo-gimi’s aunt.

I like to say that just because a source exist, doesn’t mean the story is true, and that’s why you need to be careful about where the story is coming from. This is a prime example of such case. I have read in passing some other English-language books about Japanese history that quote James Murdoch. Well, James Murdoch’s text... is not entirely accurate, as we have just seen. It might not be a good idea to blindly trust everything this book says. 

When you read any text, even if the book is presenting a very confident claim or cites a legitimate-sounding source, just take everything with a grain of salt and be prepared to have your understanding completely debunked by something else somewhere in the future. 

Excavation of old castles are still underway, and medieval paperwork still continue to be discovered. People like Murdoch is not at fault because they probably write based on what they have at the time. We now have more resources than they do. Keeping up to date with new discoveries is not easy, so if you intend to research for the purpose of learning about the facts, it’s best to not be too attached to a popular idea just because it’s often featured in media or fiction.

The Azai Ruled Omi? Right?

  Hey everyone! It has been a while! As I said previously I’ve been double checking my words and doing research before continuing to post on here. Today I’m back and want to start by talking about my favorite clan of the Sengoku Era. The famous Azai (or Asai) clan of Omi! The famous rulers of Omi right?   Well, not quite. In a lot of modern media it is common to say that the Azai ruled over Omi Province. Unfortunately, this isn’t quite true. Today I’d like to talk about the Azai and what land they did and didn’t rule over. I’m also going to be including brief history lessons on the Azai clan’s three rulers.    First let’s talk about Grandpa Azai, Mr. Azai Sukemasa. Before Sukemasa the Azai had no land to call their own and weren’t what one would consider rulers. However, due to an internal power struggle of the clan he was in he would end up gaining forces and build a castle in the Northeastern part of Omi called “Odani”. Unfortunately, he would soon find himself locked in conflict with the rulers of South Eastern Omi, the Rokkaku. The Rokkaku would prove so powerful in fact that the Azai would be forced out of Omi and seek refuge in Echizen to the North. WIth the help of the Asakura clan, Echizen’s rulers, the Azai would then move back South into Omi and pushed back the Rokkaku. Owing a large debt to the Asakura they re-established themselves at Odani, reinforcing their position and becoming the rulers of Northeastern Omi. So at this point they control only Northeastern Omi, and would also claim ownership of Lake Biwa.   Next came the second ruler of the Azai, Hisemasa. During and after the death of his father Hisemasa was locked into a seemingly endless conflict with the Rokkaku. In spite of Asakura assistance the Rokkaku clan was powerful and Hisemasa was considered a fairly weak fighter and general. Under his leadership the Azai would lose several forts and quite a bit of land to the Rokkaku forces. Fearing complete destruction and not wishing to flee to Echizen like his father before him HIsemasa would beg the Rokkaku to let the Azai become their vassal. While the Azai kept their castle, at this point we could say that all Azai lands actually belong to the Rokkaku. So, leaving this section, the Azai own one castle and clearly don’t own all of Omi.    Finally we have the most famous Azai, Azai Nagamasa. It is not exaggeration to say that leadership skipped a generation of the Azai family line. At a young age, bearing the grudge of his father and grandfather before him, Nagamasa would move the Azai’s forces South with the help of the Asakura. While the Azai didn’t take over much land they did regain all of the land they had previously lost to the Rokkaku forces. The Azai retainers asked Hisemasa to retire, and Nagamasa was made the Azai’s new Lord. This was the absolute peak of Azai land ownership. As most people know the Azai later fell to the Oda and lost all territory when their clan was destroyed but that is a conversation for another time.    The point I wanted to make with this post is that while a lot of video games and anime say the Azai ruled all of Omi, because splitting up Omi is difficult admittedly, this is in fact false. The Azai never ruled more than the Northeastern part of the province.

I seriously super want that compilation of European letters about Japan because James Murdoch cited a very strange story that makes absolutely no sense, and I want to check if he misread/misunderstood the priest somehow, or if he had combined a correct story with a different source that is messed up.

He said that Nobu had a consort, who is the daughter of "Asai, Lord of Oumi", who became interested in listening to Catholic teachings. She has three sons, who are equally interested in becoming Catholics. The second son frequently visits the seminary, and says he would convert if he could smooth it out with his dad. The eldest also wanted to convert, but the "no adultery" Commandment kiiind of is a problem.

That last two I actually can attest to be true. I have seen full quotes of them from the Japanese translation of the letters. There might be a bit fuzzy details and/or confusing Nobukatsu with Nobutaka, but that's on me. I just don't 100% remember what the priest had reported in his letter. IIRC Nobukatsu only said he wanted to hear more about the teaching when he's not caught up in battle, while Nobutaka was the one who claimed he wanted to convert but needs to talk to dad first. I could be wrong, but at least this one is not entirely WTF.

Murdoch also actually provided the full quote and citation of Frois or one of the other priests saying that Nobutada advised the priests to lighten up on the Seventh Commandment for easier conversion. He also said if the commandment was done away with, he would convert on the spot or something (and the priests were like "uh, no? we can't do that with God's words"). I mean, to be fair he was at the time still not "married" yet, but has concubines, so maybe the semantics of how this works is causing misunderstanding (concubines are considered wives after all)? Or maybe he just really wants to have lots of wives. Eh.

But this "consort" lady is like... who is this??? The description sounds like a very messed up mixture of Kitsuno, Oichi, and Gracia. This does not compute.

Also bonus points, Murdoch also said "Lord Asai" converted and lives in Azuchi with his wife. I, uh... Nagamasa and his dad are both dead. There are no "Lord Asai" living in Azuchi that I know of. Something is very wrong with this narrative, and I want to know what is the source of it.

Another source says that one of them said, instead: “Fine, never speak to me again!” And that’s simultaneously very sad and also the most sibling-ly thing I’ve read.

Shiga prefecture (Omi Province) in Japan had a large festival marking the 450th anniversary of the death of my favorite samurai Azai Nagamasa. At the celebration they had limited edition Azai merchandise. Thankfully I found a sale online and I am so incredibly happy to have these.

Imari clan

The Imai clan is a rather obscure clan with unknown origin but at some point in there history they separated and became separate clans one Imai clan which was located in Owari and the other which was located in Settsu the Owari clan became a fudai clan in the Sengoku Period with there main rivals being the Kyôgoku family. when the Kyôgoku were defeated by the Asai clan, the Imai eventually allied themselves with the Asai. Their independence was diminished by Asai Nagamasa and all but lost with the death of their lord, Imai Sadakiyo, in 1561.

On the other hand the Settsu branch of the family became wealthy and influential merchants. They reached their greatest heights under Imai Sôkyû, a famed merchant and tea master who enjoyed the favor of Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi.( *since the family split most likely they might have had different mons they could have also have keep there mon the same as well since they were related the mon I have here represents the Owari branch of the family I could not find any mon for the Settsu branch so iam hopeful that they had the same mon*)

*Imari Sadakiyo* (????-1561) Sadakiyo of the Owari branch

held Minouchi castle in Ômi province and was an ally and later vassal to the Asai. He was accidentally speared and killed by Asai retainer Kishizawa Yoichi during the Asai's efforts to recapture Futo castle from the Rokaku clan in 1561.

*Imari Sokyu* (1520-1593) Sokyu of the Sattsu branch was one of Sakai's most important merchants and a member of the city's leadership council. When Oda Nobunaga demanded that Sakai acknowledge his authority, Sokyu urged the council to submit and sent Nobunaga two valuable tea items as a good will gesture. Nobunaga awarded Sôkyû for his efforts by giving him a lucrative commission to supply firearms and gunpowder to the Oda. He instructed Nobunaga in the tea ceremony, advised Nobunaga and certain of his vassals in acquiring artworks, and as a tea master later enjoyed the favor of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Sôkyû was also present for the Grand Kitano Tea Ceremony (1586).

*The Grand Kitano Tea Ceremony*

The Grand Kitano Tea Ceremony was a mass tea ceremony held by Toyotomi Hideyoshi at Kitano Tenmangû (Kitano Tenjin Shrine) in Kyoto. It was attended by over 1000 people, and tea was served not only by the tea masters Sen no Rikyû, Tsuda Sôgyû, and Imai Sôkyû, but also by Hideyoshi himself.

Hideyoshi had recently moved into the Jurakudai palace, which was famously fitted with a tearoom covered, walls and ceiling in gold. A great lover of the arts, and lover of showing off his love of the arts, Hideyoshi arranged this massive event as an opportunity for him to show off his collection of tea wares. Anyone and everyone, regardless of rank, was nominally invited, and in fact, tea masters were practically mandated to attend; Hideyoshi declared that anyone who failed to attend would be forbidden from then on to serve tea, and even that anyone associating with such a blacklisted tea master would become blacklisted as well.

It was originally announced that the event would last ten days. As the focus was meant to be on Hideyoshi's collection of teawares, guests were restricted to bringing one tea kettle, one bucket, one teabowl.

Hundreds of temporary tea huts were erected at Kitano, and lots were drawn to see who would earn the distinction of being served tea by Hideyoshi himself; the remaining attendees were served by the aforementioned tea masters. Hideyoshi is said to have served at least 803 people himself, after which he retired to the Jurakudai and called a premature end to the event after only one day.

Scholars have suggested several theories as to Hideyoshi's decision to retire and call off the party. Some have suggested that he was upset, or disappointed, at the relative lack of attention paid to his collection, and therefore to a relative lack of admiration or prestige earned him by the event; perhaps the wabi-sabi aesthetic of the tea masters' items outshone his own, so to speak. Other scholars suggest that he was simply physically and mentally drained from serving so much tea.

This was Hideyoshi's last effort to host a large, spectacular display of his tea wares; his tea gatherings from that time onward were smaller and more intimate affairs.

Durant les périodes précédentes, si le pouvoir administratif était détenu par les hommes, les femmes s'affirmaient dans le domaine spirituel et clérical ; et notamment, sur le champs de bataille, en tant que shamanes : leur rôle était alors de prédire l'issue d'une bataille, d'apporter différentes formes de soins, ou de lancer des malédictions sur les ennemis. En outre, des recherches effectuées sur des tombeaux du IVe siècle ont permis de mettre à jour des corps de femmes en armure, entérinant l'existence d'une caste de guerrières. Ces découvertes ont pu être mises en rapport avec les récits de vie de l'impératrice Jingû, et de la reine Himiko qui vécurent au tournant du IIe et IIIe siècles. La première prit la relève de son défunt mari, l'empereur Chûai, et partit conquérir la Corée alors qu'elle était enceinte. La seconde était dite prêtresse et sorcière, et interprétait la volonté des kamis afin de diriger le pays. Avec l'époque de Kamakura et de l'installation d'un climat de guerre perpétuelle, la place des femmes au combat changea, tout en demeurant nécessaire : on distingua alors la femme « samouraï » (l'onna-bugeisha), et la femme de samouraï. Quoi que différentes, les deux combattirent pour un même but, celui de faire triompher leur clan. On retrouve chez ces femmes des valeurs fortes, retranscrites plus tard dans ce que nous connaissons aujourd'hui comme le Bushidô. L'une et l'autre étaient préparées aux arts de la guerre, que cela soit par inclination personnelle ou par nécessité d'avoir à se défendre en cas de siège. L'arme traditionnellement réservée aux femmes était le naginata, une lance terminée par une lame recourbée. À la base, cette arme était détenue par les guerriers de seconde catégorie, face à l'arc et au sabre, plus nobles. Toutefois, sa maniabilité et sa polyvalence en faisait une arme de choix entre des mains expertes, et très vite son enseignement se généralisa parmi les femmes de la caste des samouraïs. Si le pouvoir des femmes guerrières resta de mise jusqu'à la fin de l'époque de Muromachi (1333-1573), il s'amenuisa progressivement à la faveur de la montée du confucianisme qui redessina les rôles féminins et masculins au sein de la société japonaise. Notamment, en plaçant la femme dans une position inférieure à celle de son mari. Jusqu'ici, et quoique cela soit difficile à considérer, la femme japonaise médiévale jouissait d'une grande autonomie, notamment en matière de travail, mariage, sexualité et divorce. La Française de la même époque aurait difficilement pu en dire autant... Le XIXe siècle, et à plus fortes raisons la Seconde Guerre mondiale, portèrent un coup fatal à ces femmes guerrières en imprimant des standards occidentaux sur la société japonaise. La famille n'était désormais plus un clan élargi où les femmes pouvaient s'épanouir, mais un noyau restreint composé d'un père au travail, d'une mère au foyer, et d'enfants attendant de se marier ou de devenir docteur. Eh oui, le modèle de la femme soumise japonaise a moins d'un siècle et demi, et vient de chez nous. # Onna-bugeisha / épouse de samurai Les différents récits de cette époque qui nous ont été transmis marquent bien le contraste entre la femme comme victime tragique et sans défense de la guerre, et la femme guerrière qui se lance avec détermination dans la bataille : les rouleaux illustrés du Dit de Heiji montrent la mise à sac du Palais Sanjo en 1161, où l'on peut voir des dames de compagnie abattues par des samouraïs. Parallèlement, le Dit des Heike, datant de la même période, retranscrit les exploits de Tomoe Gozen, épouse et compagnon d'armes de Minamoto no Yoshinaka. Connue pour sa beauté et sa fougue, elle suivit son mari sur les champs de bataille, et notamment à la célèbre bataille d'Awazu en 1184 dont elle sortie victorieuse, à la différence de Yoshinaka qui y périt. La légende de Tomoe naquit à cette époque, où l'on raconte qu'elle brillait au combat en décapitant sans relâche ses ennemis. À la mort de son époux, elle se maria une seconde fois et eut un fils, avant de se retirer dans la province d'Echû où elle prit le voile. Être épouse de samouraï demandait parfois de mener le combat sur d'autres plans que sur le champ de bataille lui-même. En l'absence de leur mari, c'était à elles d'assurer l'intendance des forteresses, soumises à des sièges. Il s'agissait de gérer aussi bien le ravitaillement que de superviser les services d'infirmerie et de défense. Dans le Taikoki, on peut lire un hommage à femme d'Okamura Sukie, qui fit preuve de courage et de détermination dans la défense de Suemori en 1584 :« l'épouse d'Okamura était habituellement douce et réservée, c'était une femme dotée de toute la grâce qu'on aurait pu prêter à un jeune saule. Toutefois, cette valeureuse dame de cour - qui surpassait même l'estimée mère du seigneur Nobunaga – s'arma d'un naginata, et, accompagnée de deux ou trois autres personnes, patrouilla de jour comme de nuit dans le château en réprimandant sévèrement les gardes épuisés par les combats, et qui s'étaient assoupis. » # Statut Ce n'est pas seulement au combat que les femmes se sont distinguées durant la guerre. La plupart agissait comme stratèges politiques par le biais de leurs mariages. Outils de diplomatie, ces épouses de samouraïs se retrouvaient bien souvent déchirées entre leur famille, et le clan ennemi auquel elles avaient été liées par souci de trêve. Elles acquéraient plutôt alors le statut d'otage privilégiée, et étaient généralement bien mal perçues par la cour qui considérait ces éléments extérieurs comme des espionnes et des traîtres. Devenir épouse de samouraï par le biais de ces mariages arrangés plaçait ainsi la femme face au choix difficile d'être loyale envers sa famille ou son époux. Ce fut le cas pour Oichi, la plus jeune soeur du célèbre Oda Nobunaga. Celui-ci la donna en mariage à son rival, Nagamasa Asai. Quelques années plus tard, Nagamasa rompit toutefois son alliance avec Nobunaga : sans retenue, ce dernier dévasta le domaine des Asai et demanda à ce que sa soeur lui soit retournée. Nagamasa accepta, avant de mettre fin à ses jours. On raconte qu'Oichi aurait prévenu son frère des plans militaires de Nagamasa en lui faisant parvenir un sachet portebonheur crypté. outefois, toutes n'eurent pas la chance d'être épargnées par les combats. A la chute d'un château, le viol, la mise en esclavage et le meurtre étaient pratiqués sans retenue. Dans ces conditions, le suicide était l'unique possibilité restante. Chacune d'entre elles était dotée d'un tanto, une dague qui ne les quittait jamais. Si l'emploi de cette lame pouvait se faire à des fins offensifs, l'un de ses plus funestes usages était de permettre à la dame de se suicider si jamais elle se retrouvait déshonorée, et sans espoir de salut. À la différence du seppuku pratiqué par les samouraïs, le suicide des femmes s'effectuait par tanto, en s'enfonçant la lame dans la gorge. Les rudiments d'anatomie enseignés aux dames de cour leur apprenaient en quel point exact elles devaient plonger le poignard pour s'ôter correctement la vie. En attendant d'être mis à jour, l'objet était conservé sous les habits, contre la poitrine. Ainsi lorsque Hideyoshi Toyotomi enjoignit Bessho Nagaharu de se soumettre pacifiquement à Nobunaga, Nagaharu refusa et son château fut assiégé. En signe de soutient à son mari, et pour ne pas tomber entre des mains ennemis, sa femme et toutes ses dames de compagnie se donnèrent la mort. # Arme La naginata est une longue lance dotée d'une lame courbée à son sommet. Du fait de sa polyvalence et des conventions, beaucoup de femmes s'initièrent à cette arme. Sa longueur offre de grandes possibilités d'attaques à distance. Cette arme était aussi très efficace contre les maraudeurs qui attaquaient souvent à cheval. L'arc et les flèches étaient également utilisés du fait de la possibilité d'attaquer à distance. De plus, la naginata se montrait très efficace dans le combat proche. Même en considérant que les hommes étaient naturellement plus forts que les femmes, une forte femme armée d'une naginata pouvait garder à distance la plupart de ses adversaires. Durant ces situations, la force, le poids, ou l'épée ne comptaient plus. Parce qu'elle est utilisée par de nombreuses femmes légendaires, la naginata est devenue un symbole de la femme guerrière. I've thoroughly pissed off the Hatano clan. I assisted them in defeating the Ashikaga clan, however, stabbed them in the back once the Miyoshi attacked the Hatano and even stole a retainer.

As expected, I got my counteruppance...said Hatano retainer killed Nagamasa.
